Hand and Elbow Treatments

The most common cause of elbow pain is inflammation of one or both of the elbow’s two tendons. This is called tendinitis, and it is often the result of overuse. “Repetitive movements from everyday work, household chores, golf, or tennis can affect the muscles above and below the elbow and cause tendinitis.”

De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis

Washerwoman Sprain:

Symptoms

De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis is also known as ’Washerwoman Sprain’, affecting the thumb side of the wrist. It gets very painful with everyday activities such as carrying a child, cooking, playing golf and may worsen with paying tennis. There are several distinctive symptoms of De Quervain’s tenosynovitis such as, pain and swelling around the thumb, difficulty in moving the thumb and wrist when doing activities that involve holding or grasping.

Cause

It has been observed this condition occurs when the wrist is bent and compressed during sleep and also associated with chronic overuse of the wrist, there are tendons that connect the wrist and lower thumb enabling movement of the hand. This tendons slide through a sheath and can swell or thicken during repetitive movement of the wrist.

Treatment

Soft tissue therapies may be used for quick relief of the pain and minimizing the inflammation. A Chiropractor will recommend specific strengthening and stretching exercises that involve the wrist, thumb, and forearm.

Golfer’s/Tennis Elbow:

Symptoms

Inflammation of the muscles and tendons on the outer part of the elbow. Once this area is stressed, it will place pressure on the nerves and when a nerve is compressed, it can lead to muscular weakness and tingling feeling. Tennis elbow is inflammation of the lateral epicondyle, the bony part outside of the elbow and can also lead to burning and achy sensations. This can lead to weak grip of hands and irritation of the forearm muscles.

Cause

The cause of tennis elbow is repetitive use of the forearm extensor muscles, certain activities are more commonly associated with tennis elbow, for example sports, butchering, painting, plumbing, fishing, use of computer, playing certain musical instruments and so on. Tennis elbow can affect people of all ages.

Treatment

A chiropractor will examine if there is a misalignment in your spine, neck, or shoulders that may be the cause for weakness or injury to the elbow. In this case, a basic chiropractic adjustment may be all your need to stop your symptoms of pain or apply ice to the outside elbow two or three times a day for two to three weeks after the adjustments.
